Full Name:
Mervyn Oliver Octopus, a.k.a. Squiddly Diddly
Age:
22 (Birthday: June 6)
Gender:
Male
Species:
Common octopus
Residence:
Bubbleland Sea Park, San Diego, California
Personality:
Squiddly enjoys the simpler pleasures in life from his home in Bubbleland: as long as he gets a good meal and a chance to watch the television in Chief Winchley’s office, he is generally satisfied. While he is easy to please, he longs for more. Sometimes he loves being the center of attention: has aspirations of being the star attraction at Bubbleland, and feels his vast array of talents are going to waste. This sometimes causes him to crash other animals’ performances, much to their chagrin.
Squiddly is a generally sweet, extroverted animal who has no problems striking up conversations with perfect strangers; problem is, not many have the time or patience to return the favor. He has several close friends in his circle and gladly helps them out whenever they are in need—as long as it isn’t financially. He has a fear of hurting them and sometimes overcompensates for his behavior when he does.
Likes:
Having grown up on a completely aquatic diet, Squiddly enjoys eating fish, be it raw or cooked, although he is willing to eat other things if fish isn’t available, even if he isn’t going to enjoy it. He enjoys listening to surf and new wave music, and usually sings along to it. Although it doesn’t take much to satisfy him, he gets plenty of enjoyment performing before crowds—whether the crowds want him or not. He likes to watch the television and is usually fighting with Chief Winchley for control of the set.
Dislikes:
Squiddly hates eating any beef or chicken, finding it to be inferior to seafood in every way. Worse, it’s hard for him to keep sizable portions of it down.
While at Bubbleland, Squiddly isn’t fond of being treated less than kindly by other people, even if they’re his superiors. As a matter of fact, abuse of any kind against any animal angers him enough that he can’t resist playing a few tricks on them…such as wrapping his tentacle around someone’s leg and trying to pull him into the pool.
Talent and Abilities:
As evidenced by his piano playing, Squiddly is ambidextrous: he can do different things at the same time with different hands and/or tentacles.
Squiddly has four tentacles on his back: two upper, two lower. Not only can they be used as weapons to slap enemies around, they can also be used to grab onto ledges or rails, or to hold things if both his hands are full.
He is an experienced musician, although not an established one. He learned to play the piano and keyboards at school, and can also play the guitar, saxophone and percussion to a slightly lesser degree. Sometimes he plays two pianos, one on each hand, as a “stunt performance.”
Squiddly is one of only a few friends of Yogi’s that can actually breathe underwater, requiring no need for any apparatus. As an underwater creature he can jet through the water, faster than any of his friends.
When threatened underwater, Squiddly squirts ink from sacs located between his gills as an escape mechanism.
Weaknesses:
Because of his soft, thin body, Squiddly is easily prone to injury, especially to his head (where he has little protection) and his limbs. This puts him in situations where he is extremely cautious in above-ground combat.
Squiddly is susceptible to dehydration whenever he is out of the water, especially on hot, dry days. Sometimes he takes a flask of water with him in order to keep him going.
Squiddly usually lacks knowledge of current events—he received a waterproof tablet from Chief Winchley as a gift only recently, and he finds it difficult to get into his office to read the newspaper. Sometimes the Chief or Squiddly’s friends have to keep him informed.
Appearance:
Squiddly's appearance differs from his original design in that he now has hands and feet, plus four tentacles protruding from his back—two upper and two lower.
History:
Squiddly is the youngest of two siblings. Born in Santa Barbara, most of his childhood was spent being raised by his widowed father; his mother passed away when he was four. His childhood was rather normal: he had hopes and dreams like every other child, wanting to be like someone on TV. His favorite shows were the variety specials where the has-beens and never-weres would perform circus acts. The commercials for the aquatic theme parks sprinkled throughout cemented his interest in being rich and famous.
He began taking music and theater classes during his middle school years. While his peers in theater class laughed him off as some sort of ham, he became a proficient piano player while dabbling in a few other instruments.
Not long after graduating high school, he spotted an opening at the Bubbleland Sea Park. Although he got off to a rough start by asking Chief Winchley, “Pardon me, janitor, could you show me where the Chief may be?”, he was good enough to be offered a spot at the park. Then the time came to select a name. Mervyn wouldn’t work, in the Chief’s opinion. Oliver Octopus was also considered, until he knew of a popular attraction at a rival park going by that name. Stuck for any further ideas, Winchley—and the former Mervyn Octopus—had to settle for “Squiddly Diddly.”
Anything Else?
While Squiddly can remain out of water for long periods, he sleeps underwater to avoid the risk of being severely dehydrated afterwards. Usually this involves the filling of a bathtub.
