When I started commissioning character redesigns last year, I envisioned the animal characters as evolved, humanoid beings rather than simply “toons.” Given the variety of critters that inhabit the Hanna-Barbera landscape, evolutions could be split up into three groups:
Humanoid animals: An animal that exhibits human traits, such as talking and standing on two feet. Exhibits human intelligence. Most of the Hanna-Barbera characters fall into this group. They are also permitted to do things humans can do, such as have a driver’s license or credit card. They are also exempt from “no pets allowed” rules!
Advanced animals: An animal that is midway between feral and humanoid, it exhibits some forms of human intelligence. Dino, Astro and Scooby-Doo are good examples of animals that aren’t there yet.
Feral animals: An animal with standard intelligence for its species. Does nothing to little outside of what the species usually does.
What are your thoughts on this? Note that there may be gray areas between the three.

I see no problems with this idea. What's an example of a gray area?

Dino pretty much toes the line between being completely feral and exhibiting some advancement, actually, even though I said he was “advanced.”
