Full Name:
Peter Henry Potamus
Age:
34 (birthday: October 30)
Gender:
Male
Species:
Nile hippopotamus
Residence:
A simple one-bedroom house somewhere on the west coast of the United States most of the time. Other times, his balloon.
Personality:
Peter longs for adventure and gets most of his enjoyment going back in time with his friend So-So and taking in the various customs and peoples he meets in his travels. When dealing with controversial figures and people he doesn’t like, he still treats them with respect out of fear that he would end up in trouble with them. He is cautious enough to avoid meddling in history—however horrible—as it could have adverse effects on himself, his friends, or other people around the world.
Having been to the future, he is aware of what would in store for the earth if man kept contributing to its doom. He is very picky about recycling almost to the point of telling people off about the cigarette butts they leave on the sidewalk.
Outside of time travel, Peter is very easy-going and affable, often chatting it up with his friends about various subjects, more often than not stories about his travels. He is generally polite to other people, and is ready to help them out with their problems if they need it. His experiences with many lovely women in his travels has given him a somewhat lecherous side, although he manages to keep it in check with no problems.
Likes:
Peter loves eating fruit, especially watermelon and nectarines. He usually has vegetarian meals, only eating meat when he has no other alternative. He enjoys reading newspapers and non-fiction books, using the computer and listening to music from the 70s and 80s. He is proficient in two instruments—guitar and trombone—and is trying to practice singing, though he doesn’t seem to be doing so well there. He sometimes takes part in recreational soccer, playing a defenseman.
Dislikes:
Naturally, Peter cannot stand generally unlikeable people. He has a low opinion of politicians in general; he feels they sell the people otherwise undesirable laws based on lies and mental gymnastics, especially laws that pretty much repeat catastrophic history or cause pollution for the profit of others. Furthermore, he is wary of people blindly accepting things without first verifying them.
While he doesn’t mind eating meat, he hates eating certain offal of an animal, namely hearts and livers due to the texture.
Talent and Abilities:
Peter has built up a knowledge of history in his mind and isn't afraid to use it to his advantage. His only worry is if his adversaries know their history as well.
While hippos aren't normally terrific swimmers, Peter learned how to swim from an early age and is now not only a good swimmer, traveling slightly faster than the average human (about five miles per hour), but also an experienced SCUBA diver with at least 60 dives under his belt.
He can run fairly well in spite of his bulky size, running at around 15 miles per hour, although he usually prefers to jog if there is no reason for him to run. He is also able to climb steep hills fairly well.
Peter has a very thick skin, allowing him to take some big blows. Theoretically, a bullet fired from a distance wouldn't be enough to pierce any of his vital organs. He is fairly strong as well, not only able to lift heavy objects without any problem, but able to hold his own in a fight.
He has a strong bite, putting a lot of pressure on whatever food is in his mouth.
Weaknesses:
Peter is so committed to doing what is right that he sometimes doesn’t know when to quit whenever danger happens, causing him to take risks that could affect his life and that of his friends.
His large size is a major liability: he has difficulty hiding himself whenever in danger because of the fewer places someone of his size can fit, and sneaking around could be a problem because of his weight. He cannot jump very high, either, as opposed to his colleagues.
It takes a lot for Peter to be very angry, but when he does, he lashes out hard, relentlessly beating the creature on the other end. It takes a lot for his buddies to pull him away or to calm him down, too.
Appearance:
Art by Fini-Mun
Peter has other outfits, including a casual outfit, one for the beach, one for SCUBA diving and one for formal or business occasions.
History:
The Potamuses loved the past. Peter's father was a curator at a history museum; his mother worked as a teacher. The family was pretty much well-off when Peter came into the world. His first fascination with the subject came from watching old movies on TV, whether it was the old swashbuckling epics or the simple cowboys-and-Indians B-flicks. His frequent trips to his father’s workplace, combined with his mother's knowledge, determined his vision. He was an excellent student, graduating from college with a major in history.
Upon his father's death, he inherited an untested time machine he had kept under wraps for fear that it would be used by the wrong people for the wrong purposes. One spin of the dial and he ended up 120 years in the future in a place Peter mistook for a barren, uninhabited new planet; he was in utter shock when he discovered it was the earth. The experience gave Peter a new vision in addition to educating people about the past: being careful about the future.
The life of an explorer like Peter would have been lonely had he not put in a personals ad seeking a companion for his travels. One animal, a monkey named So-So, replied back, and the two of them have had many merry travels together ever since.
Anything Else?
Peter once had the thought of taking a photograph of So-So planting a wet kiss on Adolf Hitler’s lips, but given his cautiousness about disturbing history, he didn’t go ahead with it.
Peter’s voice is an approximation of that of 1930s film comedian Joe E. Brown. His voice is similar to Lippy the Lion’s.
